Happy Birthday to K.J. Yesudas

K.J. Yesudas who is an Indian classical musician, playback singer is celebrating his 75th birthday today (January 10th 2015). We at wish Yesudas Happy Birthday.

K.J. Yesudas is an Indian classical musician, playback singer and this legend playback singer dominated the film industry for nearly five decades. He sung in nearly 70,000 songs in various languages of India including Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Punjabi, Marathi, Tulu, Arabic, Russian and Latin.

He is fondly called as Gana Gandharavan. He was honored with National Award for the Best male Playback Singer seven times, Padma Bhushan (2002), Padma Shri (1975) and the State Award for the Best Playback Singer 43 times, by the state governments of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and west Bengal. He is the only singer who has been accorded the title Asthana Gayakan of Kerala state.

Yesudas was honored with the CNN-IBN outstanding achievement award in the year 2011 having recorded over 50,000 songs in a five decade career. He sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai in the year 2006.

The first song sung by Yesudas is Jaathi Bhedam Matha Dwesham on November 14th, 1961 and he usually sings this song on all the special occasions in front of the audience. He started his singing career in the early 1960s.

 Yesudas has performed in many major cities around the globe and he was invited by the Soviet Union government to perform at music concerts in various cities in the USSR. He sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan. He became one of the senate members in the International Parliament for safety and Peace.

He was honored with an honorary award by UNESCO for Outstanding Achievements in Music and Peace at the Music for peace event in Paris. He travelled all around Kerala with his musical troupe to raise funds for the Indian Prime Minister’s National Defense Fund.

Yesudas began a cross-country musical campaign against terrorism in Thiruvananthapuram with the motto ‘Music for Peace’. He acted as cultural ambassador for India through his performances in abroad by promoting Indian music.
